I got a bad chest cold last week with 3 concerts on the books. I was dreading singing while sick. And I don’t love the feeling of performing high on cold medicine. It all felt like cursed timing. I tend to believe in signs, so it was hard not to take the illness as the universe’s way of telling me not to play music last week.
But then after talking to a friend, I thought: Screw it. Getting sick doesn’t mean anything. Just do the shows and have a good time.
And I did. I ate as much raw garlic and ginger as I could, and I powered through all three concerts with the best bunch of musicians a girl could ask for. I reeked of garlic, but I didn’t care. I’m so glad I didn’t treat a sickness as proof that the celestial cards were stacked against me, or I would have missed not only the music, but getting to connect with all the people in the audience afterward.
Reader, just a reminder as we go through our week: will power (and garlic) can accomplish so much. We can with choose to believe that the universe wants us to fail, or we can choose to believe that we can do hard things. Let’s choose the latter this week, and I’ll see you next Monday. -Em
