I took my kids deep sea fishing last week. They loved every minute. We caught 12 fish and released them all. The fish were too young and small to eat. I don’t think the kids will ever hear the song “Baby Shark” quite the same way again.
All week long, we caught things by accident. Mom and I went crabbing and caught spade fish and shrimp. The kids tried to catch grouper and instead got sharks, catfish, and small fish called “croakers.” We caught sight of dolphins while looking at sunrises and we found sand dollars while trying to make it to the edge of the island.
And in the end, finding these things by accident proved to be far more thrilling than what we initially set out to find.
Reader, life is fishing. We don’t catch exactly what we want. Setting out with a goal and allowing it to change can lead us to experiences beyond our limited vision. On vacation, I learned the value in setting off, being ready for your course to shift, and then standing in awe and gratitude of what you find along the way.
I’m holding that lesson close to my chest this week. Wishing you a wonder-filled week of hard work and surprise pay-offs. I’ll see you next Monday. -Em
