Filling The Vessel

This'll be a short blog.  Because I'm mad today.

Not because I just spent another Sunday scrubbing urine off the walls of the public restrooms in my building.  Not because I cleaned more booze bottles and cigarette butts and candy wrappers off of my building's front step than I ever have before.  Not because I found more folks broke into my building's basement and thought it would be fun to smash lightbulbs and things.  And not even because I stayed home from my family's vacation--where I could have been relaxing and playing music with my loved ones--to clean up after all of these shenanigans

I'm not mad about these things because I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to work.  I have a job.  My job is to tend to a building, build a restaurant in it, play music, and raise a family.  I like having a job.  Jobs are good.

(But let's be clear: I don't enjoy the actual act of cleaning up urine, so really, don't ever pee on my walls.  Ever.)

No, I'm furious, because I did all the work on an empty stomach in a tired body with a broken spirit.

Eleanor Brown famously wrote: "Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve others from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel."

Reader, this vessel is EMPTY.  I'm off to replenish it.  I hope you'll take the day off on Labor Day tomorrow to do the same.  See you next Sunday. -Em
